Petition to The Municipal Manager eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality

The proposed tariff increases in EThekwini are significant and unaffordable. Residents should expect higher bills for water, electricity, sanitation, refuse removal, and property rates. The poor are most affected.

If you would like to note your objections to the planned tariff increases, complete the form. Your objection and details will be sent to the Ethekwini Municipality.

TO: The Mayor, All Ward Councillors, Chief Financial Officer, and Municipal Manager

OBJECTION TO PROPOSED TARIFF INCREASES FOR THE 2026/2027 FINANCIAL YEAR

We, the residents and ratepayers of Ethekwini Municipality, who are also “paying customers” funding the city’s operations, hereby object in the strongest terms to the proposed tariff increases for the 2026/2027 financial year.

OUR DEMANDS FOR THE 2026/2027 FINANCIAL YEAR ARE:

Zero tariff increases across all municipal services, including rates, electricity, water, sewerage, refuse, and any other charges. Immediate disconnection of all illegal electricity and water connections within 90 days. Elimination of fruitless, wasteful and unauthorized expenditure, with personal accountability and prosecution for any officials or politicians authorizing such expenses. Improved efficiency in municipal operations, ensuring optimal use of resources (staff, equipment, and infrastructure) to ensure improved service delivery and “better value for our money” across all suburbs. Significant enhancement in customer care services and the Ethekwini Call Centre, in line with “Batho Pele principles”. Public Participation that Ethekwini Municipality adopts Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) as the official public participation policy. This objection is submitted as a single formal objection, regardless of whether it is sent via a broadcast email platform. Kindly acknowledge receipt and respond within seven days. REMEMBER: We are the paying consumers of Ethekwini and have “locus standi” with a direct interest in this matter.

Now is the time to act!

objection to tariff increases for reasons stipulated. Unaffordable and municipality not addressing critical issues to enhance service delivery and keep tariffs at reasonable levels.
